The Hopi have returned to the Well! In a cooperative effort between the Park Service, Friends of the Well, Institute of Ecotourism and the Hopi Tribe, a traditional Hopi Garden has been created at the Monument.
Hopi elder, Jerry Honawa from third mesa leads this project. This effort returns the Hopi to their ancestral lands in the Verde Valley and acts as an interpretive tool for the Park Service.
Volunteers and Park Service personnel have worked to create a 50 x 150 foot garden plot surrounded by a protective fence. The garden has been prepped, the fence built and seeds planted. We are happy to say we have almost 100% germination and are now weeding, watering and working to make this an exhibit that park visitors can enjoy.
Here are some slideshows of our progress so far.
