Visit the Well

Montezuma Well is a detached unit of Montezuma Castle National Monument. While many people visit Montezuma Castle, few know about this additional part of the monument. Located 11 miles north from Montezuma Castle, The Well also features pre-historic Sinaguan dwellings, but additionally a unique bio-system which is home to species of animals found nowhere else on earth. And there is no fee to visit The Well.

Perhaps because it is less well known, The Well gives visitors a less hurried, quieter experience. Walk around the rim and then down into the Well where you can view the Sinaguan ruins. Or take the winding trail down to where the water exits the Well into Wet Beaver Creek. Here you can view the ancient canal the Sinaguans used to divert the water down to their gardens. The trails feature many interpretive plaques pointing out the different flora and fauna of the area. In addition to the Sinaguan ruins, the remains of a Hohokam pit house can be viewed on the road leading in and out of the park. There is also a large, grassy picnic area.
